Founded in 1862, the Plymouth School of Navigation is the oldest maritime school in the country. Plymouth College of Technology was renamed the School of Navigation in 1962 and granted polytechnic status in 1970. The University of Plymouth was created in 1992 after Plymouth Polytechnic obtained university status.

In 2012, Plymouth was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for marine and maritime education and research, and 11 subjects were rated among the top ten in the UK for student satisfaction. The University of Plymouth’s student union is located there as well. The City Center Campus is conveniently located near the Marine Station, which can be reached on foot. The School of Medicine is housed at the North Plymouth campus. Those interested in pursuing careers in dietetics, occupational therapy, operating department practice, physiotherapy, or podiatry can do so at this school.

The University of Plymouth offers both undergraduate and graduate level programs to students from other countries.
