Founded in 1862, the Plymouth School of Navigation is the oldest maritime school in the country. Plymouth College of Technology was renamed the School of Navigation in 1962 and granted polytechnic status in 1970. The University of Plymouth was created in 1992 after Plymouth Polytechnic obtained university status.
In 2012, Plymouth was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for marine and maritime education and research, and 11 subjects were rated among the top ten in the UK for student satisfaction. Additionally, the city is ranked 11th in the UK for the most cost-effective places to study. Each year, over 12,000 Plymouth students benefit from placements and work-based learning.
The university has strong partnerships with other universities and institutions in the southwest, and is the only post-1992 university to have its own medical school. Recently, several departments have been developed, including the library and student union, the faculties of Health and Education and Society, and Marine Science. Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Geography, and Environmental Science, and Art and Design at the University of Plymouth also rank highly nationally.

University of Plymouth submitted 78% of submissions in the REF 2021, an improvement from the 63% in the corresponding 2014 REF.

Students can choose from a variety of halls that provide a safe and friendly environment.As a student, your accommodation licence will be with the University, and you will be provided with on-campus accommodation facilities by UPP, one of the leading providers of on-campus residential and academic accommodation in the UK.Their responsibility is to provide and maintain the buildings, while the University’s is to provide support to you, including social events and welfare services. Both University facilities and the city centre are only a few minutes’ walk from their Halls, located either on campus or within the nearby Student Village.
If you want to live in one of the University’s dorms, you’ll need to sign a license agreement. Their friendly staff is here to help you every step of the way, from booking to after your stay, with any questions or concerns you may have. Their Halls Team is here to help you whenever you need it, any day of the week. You can rest assured that all of your needs will be met without a hitch thanks to the team’s established relationships with other student services and departments at the University. In addition, They host a series of events called “Residence Life,” which consists of contests, activities, and trips only open to residents. You can also get to know your future roommates and keep up with social events through their resident-specific Facebook groups and other forms of social media.
The main campus of the University of Plymouth, also known as the City Centre campus, is home to the Schools of Arts, Humanities, and Business, Science and Engineering, and Health. The University of Plymouth Students’ Union is also located here. The City Center campus can also be walked to the Marine Station. The Faculty of Health uses the North Plymouth campus. Among the courses offered here are Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Operating Department Practice, Physiotherapy, or Podiatry.

As in many other universities in the United Kingdom, the academic year is divided into semesters. The cost of a bachelor’s degree is around 15,000 USD per year. For those interested in obtaining a master’s degree here, you should prepare to spend at least 9,000 USD per year. The university also offers scholarship programs that can dramatically reduce the cost of tuition for students.
International students can apply for a number of scholarships at the University of Plymouth. For some scholarships, students are automatically awarded if they apply, while others require them to check the eligibility requirements.
